Boston Herald Review...see it this week!

'Fragments' Takes Page out of 'Juno' By James Verniere

http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/movies/reviews/view/2008_06_27_‘Fragments__takes_Page_out_of_‘Juno_/srvc=home&position=also

“Juno Has a Nervous Breakdown” might be the best way to describe Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald’s “The Tracey Fragments,” a dysfunctional family drama featuring a tour de force turn by Juno herself, Ellen Page.

If you have an aversion to split screens, the experimental technique that enjoyed a brief vogue in the 1960s and is revived here with a passion, steer clear of this vertigo-inducing entry. Otherwise, paging Page fans everywhere.

When the story begins, Tracey Berkowitz (Page) is naked, wrapped in a curtain on a bus with bright-blue seats, addressing the camera - and she tells a sorry tale indeed.

An outcast at school because of her prepubescent lack of womanly attributes, 15-year-old Tracey is also unhappy at home, where her doltish, working-class father (Ari Cohen) grounds her unfairly and chain-smoking drudge mother (Erin McMurtry) seems to hate her. Adding to Tracey’s and our sense of dislocation, her shrink is played by a man (Julian Richings) in drag.
When Tracey’s younger brother Sonny (Zie Souwand) disappears without a trace while with his sister, all hell breaks loose in the Berkowitz home, and Tracey, whose job it was to care for and keep an eye on Sonny, runs away.

Did I mention that Tracey believes she “hypnotized” Sonny and convinced him to think he was a dog?

“The Tracey Fragments” is a modern-day “Candide”-like, picaresque tale in which Tracey encounters, among other things, a convenience store clerk with horns and a drug dealer in trouble with his supplier (the film’s one unfortunate stereotype).

Visually, the movie is fascinating and ambitious. The screen responds to Tracey’s words, creating “multiframe” images with screens of various sizes within the screen, swirling and fluttering like a stream of psychic, autumnal leaves.

McDonald, working with Canadian writer Maureen Medved adapting her own novel, uses the art of film to bring the thoughts in Tracey’s head to vivid Mondrian-like life.

A sequence featuring Patti Smith’s incantatory anthem “Land: Horses” is utterly spellbinding (speaking of which, Smith’s life is a movie waiting to be made). In other scenes, Tracey reads a graphic novel called “Ed the Happy Clown,” which seems to be a variation of her adventures.
Narratively, “The Tracey Fragments” is also like origami, folded and refolded upon itself. If it were “straightened out,” this 77-minute entry would be more like three hours.

“The Tracey Fragments” should be seen by anyone interested in the art of film and the art of bravura film acting. It is also a further reminder that Page is the real thing.

But we knew that already.

Poster designers were bpg (awesome) with a lot of involvement from Mark Slone at Alliance and Bruce and myself were involved too. It was one of the most fun and rewarding experiences of making the movie.

New York City - Tomorrow's the Day!

The reviews are coming in (The Village Voice says it's "bedazzling!" The New York Observer gives it 3 out of 4 stars and says Ellen Page gives "a virtuoso performance!" Time Out NY is afraid of the amazing split screens but we'll forgive them if they keep our favorite bar a secret!), the popcorn is popping (no worries, they'll pop new popcorn for you on Friday), and somewhere in the Village a small bar is unaware that people are about to stumble out of a movie theater, dazed and amazed, and buy out their entire stock of booze. Yep, Friday is the big day for New York City- THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS hits the big screen, and we'd like you all to be there.

TRACEY opens Friday at the VILLAGE EAST CINEMA at 2nd Avenue and 12th Street. Showtimes are Noon, 2:00, 4:00, 6:00, 8:00, 10:10, and 12:05am (12:05 on Friday and Saturday only).

Tickets are available right now at http://www.movietickets.com/house_detail.asp?house_id=166 (you do have to change the date to Friday the 9th). Head over now and pick them up for your friends, family, and loved ones (Sunday is Mother's Day and yes, your mom wants you to take her to meet Tracey) to be sure you all have a seat for the ride.

But wait, just like the infomercials, there's more- as a special bonus, the editors of THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS, Jeremy Munce, Gareth C. Scales, and Matt Hannam will be giving a special talk and demo at the Apple Store in Soho at 7pm on Friday (upstairs in the theatre). Head over and see how three guys sat down, spent a few months in front of their Macs, and used Final Cut Pro to assemble one of the most intricately edited films ever made. There will be plenty of time to check out the demo, meet the editors, spend an hour in a side street with the party accessories of your choice (sure, you cannot drink IN the theater, but you can certainly drink next door to it) and grab a seat at the 10:10pm showing with time to spare- you'll even have enough time to flirt with the person sitting next to you, comfortable in the fact that as soon as the lights come up, you'll have a great movie to talk about. After that, it's up to you. You could try poetry, but don't be cheesy about it.

See you at the movies!

Here come the reviews!

First reviews are in for The Tracey Fragments from NYC:

Village Voice:

"McDonald’s bedazzling multi-frame experiment poeticizes and enhances an otherwise slender story (forgivable at only 77 minutes long), as planes of different sizes and shapes materialize—fading, sliding, distorting, and overlapping to convey the rage and anxiety of damaged adolescence."

http://www.villagevoice.com/film/0819,the-tracey-fragments,433930,20.html

New York Observer:

"Ellen Page remains one of the few stellar newcomers who deserves to be seen in anything she chooses to do."

Ellen Page talks to the Washington Post about Tracey

In today's Washington Post, Ellen Page talks about THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS, and how she hopes people will watch the film:

"It is one of those films where everyone will leave the film feeling something different," Page says, via e-mail. "I just hope people go in with an open mind and let go with Tracey on her crazy journey. The film requires an open heart."

#1 Downloaded Trailer on Apple.com

Just a quick post to tell you - The Tracey Fragments is the #1 downloaded trailer on:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/

Wow.

Friday, March 28, 2008

Meanwhile… in the Blogosphere

One of the most interesting things that has happened to THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS since we shot it over two years ago is that the star of our film Ellen Page (you may have heard of her and this little film she did called really do I need to tell you?) has shot to stratospheric heights of fame. Deservedly so, since she is one of the most talented actresses any of us has ever seen and just an awesome person as well. Director of THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS totally called an Oscar nomination for her during our shoot, but I don’t think any of us thought it would happen so soon.

The result of this is that a LOT more people are paying attention to our film now that it is finally getting a US release (May 9, 2008 in New York City and other cities TBA). The trailer has also hit the big time, at www.apple.com/trailers where it is presented in lovely HD.

Here are some of the recent blog articles that have sprung up since the release of the trailer.

AfterEllen.com takes a pretty extensive look at a lot of the reviews and focuses on the amazing performance of Ellen Page:

http://www.afterellen.com/blog/thelinster/the-tracey-fragments%E2%80%93ellen-page-before-she-was-juno+?&comment=481822

A Million Monkeys Typing focuses on the talents of Director Bruce McDonald, and some of his previous work:

http://millionmonkeystyping.blogspot.com/2008/03/hard-core-logo.html

Gawker.com speculates that The Tracey Fragments might be “the most annoying movie ever”:

http://gawker.com/372907/the-tracey-fragments-could-be-the-most-annoying-movie-ever

Big Picture with Colin Boyd warns Ellen fans that her performance is not adorable or sarcastic as in Juno

http://www.bigpictureradio.com/2008/03/movie-trailer-ellen-page-in-tracey.html

There are about a million out there. Enjoy!
